Sociology – Urbanization and Social Cohesion
This passage discusses the sociological impact of living in large cities.
Reading Passage
The process of urbanization is often accompanied by the deterioration of social cohesion. In densely populated areas, individuals frequently experience a sense of alienation, feeling disconnected from their community despite the physical proximity of others. Sociologists postulate that the rapid pace of city life creates an environment where social interactions are fleeting and superficial. This can exacerbate feelings of loneliness and contribute to the marginalization of vulnerable groups. To counteract these effects, urban planners try to design spaces that foster communal engagement. However, the pervasive nature of digital technology often draws people away from physical public squares, further complicating the integration of diverse populations into a unified social fabric.
